The Whitney

The Whitney restaurant in Detroit is a marvelous place that is world-famous as an upscale dining venue. Successful lumber baron David Whitney Jr. built the lavish mansion in the late 1800s. Gordon W. Lloyd, an influential architect at the time, designed the home for Whitney and his wife, Flora. He designed the mansion in Romanesque Revival style, which was popular in architecture at the time. Today, The Whitney is a beautiful example of the type of home that wealthy people in Detroit lived in during that time period.

Visiting the mansion for dinner with a companion is about as romantic as it gets. Be sure to make reservations in advance because there is limited dinner service seating in the massive 22,000-square-foot home.

The London Chop House

Established in 1938 by Sam and Lester Gruber, The London Chop House is a wonderful spot for a romantic dinner date. The London Chop House was named one of the best restaurants in the nation by James Beard. Located in Detroit’s lively business district, the restaurant has served many famous movie stars, successful businessmen and women, auto barons, attorneys, and judges. Now, Monday through Friday the restaurant is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m.  On Friday and Saturday, dinner is served from 5 to 11 p.m.
